The most effective organizations find ways to enhance natural gifts in their people instead of trying to shoehorn people into career tracks that are easy to track but force people to take on work that needs strength where they have weaknesses. It isn’t rocket science, but rocket science would fail without it.
What we learn from the space program should not be limited to space-related endeavors. People can go into orbit only with the help of large ground crews that operate differently from the way too many businesses operate.
We are not helpless against pandemic variants that are more contagious. By “masking up” in a tougher way, we can do a lot to block the variants ourselves.
Running a business “by the numbers” doesn’t take into account a workforce that has been hit this way and this pervasively. As my friend said, the pandemic has taken a society-changing proportion of people in both of my countries. Those of us who own and run businesses ought to adapt.
The FBI is late and incomplete in warning that it sees plans for armed ‘protests’ in DC and all 50 state capitols from 16 to 20 January. Ample evidence is in public view to show that 6 January was a prelude. Please stay safe if you can.
We see opportunity for 2021, growth instead of the hammering of 2020. But to accomplish that growth, we need to convert temporary make-do measures into methods of operation that are sustainable for the long term.
Within the bounds imposed by certain places having specialized capabilities, we should seek a balance about how and where we make things that is less brittle than the way we’ve been going about it.

Here we go again. In light of the pandemic, nobody is surprised. How can you put yourself in the okay group that gets through this as intact as possible?
Where operating in this pandemic is feasible, the businesses faring best aren’t simply lucky or even simply resilient. Look at the character of those businesses and the trade-offs they chose to be that way. I don’t know a single word for it, but perhaps that’s the new ideal.
