Zelenskyy Appears to Mollify DJT

Donald Trump seemed to soften his anti-Ukraine stance after receiving “an important letter” from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which he read to Congress during his State of the Union speech.

Zelenskyy called last Friday’s ambush in the Oval Office “regrettable.” He indicated he is willing to enter peace negotiations with Russia under Trump’s “strong leadership” and sign over half the proceeds of Ukraine’s mineral rights. Now that Trump has cut off all USA support for Ukraine, the country’s air defenses will run out of supplies within days unless a new source of materials comes forward immediately, which does not look possible.

Although some mainstream media outlets refer to this as Zelenskyy cracking under pressure from Trump, the way events have unfolded is close to the best path they could have taken. By not crumpling in front of the media during Friday’s ambush, Zelenskyy rallied Europe together to face threats from the new USA-Russia axis of power.

Most of the world would regard Ukraine reneging on the mineral deal as the collapse of a deal made under duress and a tit-for-tat to Trump for his repeated discarding of obligations under deals he signs.
