Waltz Had At Least 20 Signal Chat Groups for Official Work

News broke that National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, who accidentally added a journalist to a chat group for a military attack in Yemen, had his team set up at least 20 such groups for official work.

Signal is commercial software. Sensitive government information is not supposed to be discussed on it. Waltz’s team has used it for official work and to discuss sensitive information routinely. Issue areas involved have included Ukraine, China, Gaza, Middle East policy, Africa and Europe.

Signal can be set to automatically delete messages after a specified period of time, as Waltz did in the chat witnessed by a journalist. This breaks federal laws that require archival of government records.
