USA Revokes Visas of All Immigrants from South Sudan

| 0

The State Department revoked “temporary protected status” visas for everyone from South Sudan in the USA, cancelled all visa appointments and blocked entry for anyone from South Sudan.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said this was due to South Sudan not promptly engaging with efforts to repatriate an alleged immigrant from that country.

People from South Sudan were granted temporary protected status in 2011 due to fighting there after the country declared its independence from Sudan. The country is still unstable.

TPS grants the right to live and work in the USA, the right to travel, and protection from being expelled from the USA. TPS for South Sudanese was extended once but is due to expire in May 2025. Last year 133 people from South Sudan were in the TPS program.

Donald Trump has been pressing to end TPS programs for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela also. Those programs affect half a million people. Trump’s removal of TPS for Venezuelans is currently paused by order of a federal judge.
