U.S. Institute of Peace Sues to Stop Takeover by DOGE

The U.S. Institute of Peace and many of its board members sued to stop the takeover of their organization, building and systems by Elon Musk’s “Department” of Government Efficiency.

DOGE is a subset of a White House IT team, not a government department.

USIP was established by Congress in 1984 as a non-profit with Congressionally appropriated funding. It works to prevent and resolve conflicts. Its board members are nominated by the President and require Senate confirmation. However, it is not part of the federal government.

It owns its building, which is not federal property. Its board members can only legally be fired for felony conviction or malfeasance in consultation with the rest of the board. Donald Trump claims to have fired 11 board members, leaving only 3 who are close allies of his and replaced the CEO.

DOGE took over USIP with armed assistance from D.C. police, evicted its workers, changed the locks and cancelled its private security contract.
