Top IRS Officials Resign in Protest Against Sharing Data with ICE

A broad range of the topmost officials at the Internal Revenue Service resigned in protest against an agreement for the agency to share confidential sensitive taxpayer data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help track people down for deportation.

Officials who departed include:

  • Acting Commissioner Melanie Krause (the second one so far after the confirmed commissioner resigned, in post about 6 weeks)
  • Chief Financial Officer Teresa Hunter
  • Chief of Staff
  • Chief Risk Officer Mike Wetklow
  • Chief Privacy Officer Kathleen Walters
  • Chief Lawyer (may have been demoted rather than resigned, unclear from news reports)
