Southwest Airlines Flight About to Land Climbs Abruptly to Avoid Jet Crossing Runway

Southwest Airlines Flight 2504 from Omaha, Nebraska, was about to touch down at Chicago Midway Airport when a smaller business jet unexpectedly crossed the runway, forcing the Southwest flight to abruptly climb to avoid a collision.

Audio recording of air traffic control indicated the pilot of the smaller jet mistaking the controller’s instruction to stop short of the runway.

The Southwest flight flew around the airport and then landed.
