Social Security Rolls Back Plan to Cut Telephone Service

| 0

The Social Security Administration backed off from its DOGE-driven plan to cut back telephone services after widespread loud outcry against it.

SSA  had announced that as of 31 March 2025 people would no longer be able to perform identity verification by telephone. They would have to do it online or, if unable to do it that way, in person at a field office. SSA also announced it would close nearly 50 of its field offices and cut staffing at the remaining offices.

More than 72 million people rely on benefits from SSA. This requirement was going to be arduous for many and impossible for some, especially those who most need their benefits from Social Security.
