House Passes SAVE Act and Sends It to Senate

| 0

The House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act with a few Democrats joining Republicans to vote for it.

The bill would require documented proof of USA citizenship such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers when registering to vote in federal elections.

Its stated aim is to prevent non-citizens from voting, although the incidence of non-citizens doing so it practically nil. Voter fraud in general is quite rare. The bill would create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters.
People who have changed their names, such as after marriage, would be especially affected. If the name on their birth certificate does not match their current legal name, the SAVE Act appears to require extra documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order to prove citizenship.

Proving citizenship would generally have to be done in person, essentially disenfranchising citizens abroad, including not only civilians but also members of the military and their families.

The measure might not pass in the Senate.
