Signal Clone Used by National Security Adviser Waltz Has Been Hacked

The messaging app National Security Adviser Mike Waltz was photographed using in a Cabinet meeting last week was a clone, TeleMessage, which has suspended services after reporting hackers have stolen data from it.

TeleMessage can archive messages to comply with government record-keeping law. One of the reasons for the outcry about Waltz using Signal involved skirting federal laws that require archival of communications in the course of official government duties.

Photos taken last week showed Waltz was using TeleMessage to exchange messages with at least Vice President J.D. Vance, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

TeleMessage is not authorized for government use. In addition to those officials using it, some Customs and Border Protection agents appear to be using it.

Data taken from TeleMessage by hackers included message content, contact information for government officials, and login credentials for the messaging app. Entities with compromised information in TeleMessage include USA Customs and Border Protection, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and various financial services.
