OPM Tells Federal Agencies to Fire Probationary Employees

The Office of Personnel Management told federal agencies to fire nearly all probationary employees, who generally have been in their jobs less than two years.

Two days earlier, OPM told agencies to fire probationary workers who are low performers. Now there will be only “some exceptions.”

The probationary period usually lasts one to two years, depending upon the agency. In some agencies it applies not only to new hires, but also after promotions.
