National Cathedral Sermon Directed at DJT

The day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, Bishop Mariann Budde preached directly to him and VP J.D. Vance in a service at the National Cathedral in Washington DC, pleading calmly for Christ-like mercy for people who are afraid of them.

It is brave. Reporters noted how unhappy DJT looked. He made cross remarks about the service after it ended. The day before the sermon, DJT signed an executive order stripping the protections of sanctuary from such places as churches. Immigration enforcement agents can now go into such places and do what they want. Bishop Budde said what she needed to say anyway, in public, addressing him directly. She has written her name on his hate list knowing her pulpit is no longer in a sanctuary.

This is not the BIshop’s first foray defying those who persecute. In 2018, after learning that gay hate crime victim Matthew Shepard’s ashes had never been interred because no place safe from vandalism had been found, Bishop Budde presided over a ceremony at the National Cathedral and interred his ashes there.
