NASA Begins DOGE-Driven Slashing

Forced by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, a subset of a White House IT team rather than a department, NASA began slashing itself by firing its chief scientist and deputies, and closing three departments.

NASA has a small direct workforce of about 18,000. It is admired worldwide for its achievements and wizardry. It is expected to lose 5% or more of its workforce in a Reduction In Force. RIFs in the federal workforce must be done according to specific rules.

Elon Musk has been vocal about his ambitions to redirect more of the USA’s space program into his company SpaceX, which has lost two of its rockets in explosions already this year.

Departments shut down are NASA’s

• Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy
• Office of the Chief Scientist
• Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity

The Office of Personnel Management set a deadline of 13 March for all federal agencies to plan their reorganization.
