Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal for Gaza

Israel’s security cabinet and Hamas in Gaza agreed to a deal to cease fire and exchange hostages/prisoners.

Calling it a peace deal overstates it. Even so, it will be a huge improvement over the madness since Hamas’ surprise attack and hostage-taking in Israel on 7 October 2023.

The deal has three stages, beginning Sunday 19 January 2025. It is essential the same deal USA President Biden has been trying to bring to fruition since May 2024.

Stage 1. Six weeks in which more than 1600 Palestinian prisoners will be released by Israel and about one third of just under 100 hostages (alive and dead) will be released by Hamas and other Palestinian groups in Gaza. Israel will withdraw its troops from populations centers. Palestinians can begin to return to northern Gaza. Humanitarian aid will increase.
Stage 2. Hamas will release the rest of its captives. Israel will release more Palestinian prisoners and completely withdraw from Gaza.
Stage 3. Bodies of remaining hostages will be returned from Gaza. Reconstruction of Gaza will begin under international oversight.
