Blue Origin Rocket Reaches Orbit in Test Flight

| 0

Shortly after 02:00 Eastern USA time, Blue Origin launched its New Glenn rocket (named for former astronaut John Glenn). The test flight successfully achieved Earth orbit and opens the door for the company to fly missions for NASA.

Blue Origin is led by Jeff Bezos (who owns Amazon and the Washington Post). The company is two years older than competitor SpaceX which is led by Elon Musk. Where SpaceX has taken an approach similar to the tech industry mantra “move fast and break things,” Blue Origin has taken an approach more like NASA. Blue Origin has been slower to get to test flights, but so far its tests have gone as planned where SpaceX has experienced more destructive failures. Blue Origin has clearly stated ahead of tests which portions of the test might fail. In this instance, attempted recovery of the first stage by landing it on a barge failed, but the company said before launch that this was anticipated.

This test flight was the certification step needed for Blue Origin to become a genuine competitor to SpaceX as a launch provider for crewed missions for NASA, ending what has been a monopoly for SpaceX.
