Assistant Director in Charge James Dennehy at the FBI’s New York field office was forced to leave the agency after he criticized Donald Trump’s termination of senior FBI leaders and demands for lists of all FBI personnel involved with January 6 cases.

Dennehy was forced to choose between resignation or being fired. He was eligible for retirement, so he retired. Being fired could have adversely affected his retirement benefits. He spent most of his career in counterintelligence work.
