Four Republican Senators Vote with Democrats to End Tariffs Against Canada

| 0

Four Republican Senators voted with Democrats to end the tariffs Donald Trump imposed on imports from Canada.

A few hours after Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement of sweeping tariffs against nearly every nation except Russia, the Senate voted 51-48 to terminate the national emergency Trump declared earlier this year, which gave him the power to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports (as well as other tariffs on imports from other countries).

The resolution was sponsored by Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia).

The Republican Senators who voted for the resolution were:

  • Rand Paul (Kentucky)
  • Susan Collins (Maine)
  • Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
  • Mitch McConnell (Kentucky)

Under normal circumstances, the House would take up a similar resolution, where the Republican majority might vote against it. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will not allow a floor vote on such a measure.
