Federal Judge Blocks Curtailment of Birthright Citizenship

Federal District Judge John Coughenour issued a 14 day temporary restraining order which blocks implementation of Donald Trump’s executive order to curtail birthright citizenship.

While the temporary order is in effect, the judge will consider whether to issue a restraining order to prevent curtailment of birthright citizenship while the question of its legitimacy remains pending.

After the hearing, Washington state Assistant Attorney General Lane Polozola said, “This is step one but to hear the judge from the bench say that in his 40 years as a judge, he has never seen something so blatantly unconstitutional, sets the tone for the seriousness of this effort.”

So far the executive order faces five lawsuits challenging it as abrogating Section 1 of the 14th Amendment.
