DOGE Modifies Federal AutoRIF Software

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, a subset of a White House IT team rather than a government department, is modifying AutoRIF software developed by the Department of Defense to expedite Reductions In Force.

AutoRIF originated more than 20 years ago. It has been through updates since then and has been used to help agencies carry out layoffs (RIFs). The GitHub for its code at the Office of Personnel Management shows DOGE has been modifying it.

Musk’s team may intend to use AutoRIF, perhaps with AI, to fire federal workers much faster than it has been able to with less automated processes.
