Donald Trump’s administration put at least 56 senior officials in the US Agency for International Development on leave while they investigate suspicions that the agency may not have completely frozen its work.

Trump’s executive order stopping nearly all federal funding, including for humanitarian efforts such as USAID, was only in place briefly before judges issued temporary restraining orders to block its implementation.

About half USAID’s workforce are contractor who do such work as administration and data analytics. They were dismissed 28 January 2025 so suddenly that some disappeared in the midst of virtual meetings.
