DJT Purges 17 Independent Inspectors General Without Legally Required Advance Notice

| 0

Donald Trump fired 17 independent Inspectors General without legally required 30 days notice.

Inspectors General are watchdogs over federal agencies. They investigate misconduct, fraud and waste in the agencies. Depending upon who appointed them, they can be fired by the President or the head of the agency they oversee. Most of those fired were appointed by Trump during his first term as President.

Federal law requires 30 days notice to terminate an IG. Trump ordered immediate termination in violation of the law.

IGs terminated in this “Friday night massacre” include those for the departments of State, Defense, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Housing & Urban Development, Interior and Energy. The IG for the Department of Justice, Michael Horowitz, remained in office.

Exempted from the purge was Joseph V. Cuffari Jr. for the Department of Homeland Security. In October 2024, an investigative panel found that Cuffari misled the Senate during his confirmation process and committed misconduct while in office.
