DJT Orders 75 Day Pause of Law that would Ban TikTok

| 0

Donald Trump paused enforcement of a law that bans in the USA any software applications with ownership in a “foreign adversary” and exempted TikTok’s USA service providers from liability under that law for servicing TikTok during the pause.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACAA) prohibits distribution, maintainance, or updates of “foreign adversary controlled applications.” TikTok, owned by a Chinese company, is the current primary target of this law. TikTok could only continue to operate in the USA if sold to an owner deemed acceptable under the law.

After PAFACAA was upheld by the Supreme Court 17 January, it was due to take effect 19 January. TikTok “went dark” on that day and reappeared 14 hours later after Trump announced his intention to provide this reprieve. The order pauses enforcement for 75 days.

Trump favored banning TikTok during his first term, but since then has become popular on the app.
