As Donald Trump and his wife Melania took their seats for the opening night of a new production of Les Miserables at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the audience gave him resounding boos and some cheers.

It was Trump’s first time to attend the venue since he purged its leadership, made himself its chairman, appointed loyalist Richard Grenell to run it, and cancelled a number of upcoming performances he considered too “woke.”

Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, adviser Corey Lewandowski, and MAGA mouthpiece Laura Loomer also attended.

Half of the cast reportedly boycotted the performance, leaving their roles to understudies.

When one group of ticket holders learned that the president and others in his close orbit would be at the performance, they reportedly gave their tickets for seats just below Trump’s box to a group of drag performers, They attended in full costume and received hearty cheers from the audience.

When lights came on for intermission, some people cheered and applauded Trump. A woman in the orchestra section yelled “Felon, you’re a convicted felon.” Cheers faded. Trump walked out. Her voice became more audible, saying, “Convicted felon, rapist!” A security guard escorted her away.

While he was out during intermission, someone else shouted “F**k Trump” and got a crowd response of loud cheers and applause. Some “We love you” while others booed. Trump got a loud cheer when he returned to his seat.

The musical is based on Victor Hugo’s novel of 1862 about French peasant Jean Valjean. Inspector Javert doggedly pursues him about a petty crime while France moves to revolution against a government idealists regard as corrupt. A number of people remarked on timely that looked as Trump sent federal agents to make mass round-ups of immigrants and sent military troops against non-violent protesters in Los Angeles.
