Democrat John Ewing Jr. Elected First Black Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska

Registered Democrat John Ewing Jr. was elected as the first Black Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, ousting Republican incumbent Jean Stothert after three terms.

Although the election is non-partisan, both campaigns became more partisan as they approached election day. Near the end, the political right ran attack ads against Ewing about Democratic support for young transgender people and the political left ran attack ads against Stothert about her support for Donald Trump. In Omaha, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans, making the city a blue dot in a red state.

Ewing is stepping up from his previous 17 year post as Douglas County Treasurer. Before that, his past includes 25 years of service as a police officer, rising to a high rank. He promised to improve basic city services and help all parts of the city to grow.
