Canadian Detained by USA Despite Visa Paperwork and Job Offer

Jasmine Mooney, a Canadian from British Columbia, was detained 3 March 2025 by the USA at the Mexican border despite having visa paperwork, a job offer and a history of working legally in the USA, and is being held with no clear release plan.

An immigration attorney was at last able to reach her 13 March 2025.

Mooney is a 35 year old business consultant and co-founder of a drinks brand. B.C. Business magazine published a feature about her in 2019 highlighting her contributions to the industry. She has no criminal record. No charges have been filed against her. She was crossing the border to apply for a Trade NAFTA (TN) visa, which she has done before without difficulty.

Mooney worked under a TN visa for a Los Angeles health drink company starting in spring of 2024. In November 2024, visited Vancouver. Upon trying to return to Los Angeles, a Border Patrol revoked her valid 3 year visa without giving any official reason for doing so. When she had a new job offer and visa paperwork to go with it, she went to the border to get a new visa.

She has been transferred twice, each time in handcuffs and chains. She is currently sleeping on the floor under a foil sheet in a concrete cell with almost 30 other women. The cell has no natural light, no mats to sleep on, no blankets, and minimal bathroom facilities. Lighting is on constantly and the cell is cold.

Cases like hers are no longer unusual.
