USA Deports Citizen Child Brain Cancer Patient with Undocumented Parents and Citizen Siblings

The USA detained a family at an immigration checkpoint as they rushed from Rio Grande to Houston for an emergency medical checkup, and deported all of them to Mexico including the 10 year old brain cancer patient who is a citizen of the USA.

Three of the four siblings deported are also citizens of the USA. Their parents are undocumented. They have no criminal history. One 17 year old child remains in the USA.

The family made the same trip at least five times before. Letters from their doctors and lawyers were accepted to let them through the checkpoint, but not this time.

The 10 year old girl’s brain cancer was diagnosed in 2024. Surgery removed the tumor, but she still has swelling on her brain. This causes trouble with speech and mobility on her right side. The girl was routinely seeing doctors to her recovery, undergoing rehabilitation and taking medicine to prevent convulsions.

One of her siblings, a 15 year old brother, has potentially life threatening Long QT syndrome and must wear a heart monitor. Neither the 10 year or nor the 15 year old is receiving the medical care they need in Mexico.

Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan says “families can be deported together” regardless of status and it is up to parents to decide whether to leave their children behind. However, when the children are USA citizens and parents are undocumented immigrants, if left behind the children can be sent to foster care. It can be hard for parent to ever reclaim custody of their children.

In theory, establishing legal documents for power of attorney or guardianship can put children left behind in the care of someone chosen by the parents.
