ACLU Sues Government for Rights of Immigrants Sent to Guantanamo

| 0

The American Civil Liberties Union sued Donald Trump’s regime in federal District Court on behalf of detainees who have been sent to the naval base at Guantanamo Bay.

“Gitmo” is typically used to detain terrorism suspects.

New detainees, at least three dozen so far, are from roundups of immigrants. ACLU argues their right to legal counsel is being violated. ACLU asks the court to make the government allow detainees to have in-person access to lawyers as soon as possible, with video and telephone access in the meantime. So far names, criminal convictions or allegations and other details about the detainees are not released.

These detainees are the initial wave of Donald Trump’s announced intention to turn Gitmo into a large detention center for immigrants, ostensibly with criminal records. At least one sent there so far is an asylum seeker with no criminal record, spotted by his sister in a photo op for Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Trump has ordered construction of facilities to hold 30,000.
