Quick Note for Opening Day

As I write this today, both of my countries, the UK and USA, are trying to reopen a significant chunk of the economy.

This is not a normal opening day for anything. Don’t go out unless either you can do so safely or you are in a position where you must. If you don’t have to go out and your thinking tells you that it isn’t safe, continue isolating yourself.

If you do have to go out, do what you can to protect yourself and the people you care about. Wear a mask. Stay a safe distance from other people whenever possible. Keep your hands away from your face when you aren’t clean and in a safe place. And on and on.

If you have to go to work and your workplace isn’t doing what it should to protect you, raise your voice when you can. Make concrete suggestions when you can. Join a labor union if you can. (Pressing for worker protection is classic union territory.)

You know better than to go out and feed the economy simply because authorities want you to. Do what you can to be safe. It’s your life, not theirs.

And if you have a business and aren’t sure what to do to adapt to these interesting times… I’m advising and working with some, especially a very large one, but I’ve got some capacity left for you. Speak up if you need help.
