Thanksgiving Blessings

If you are in the States, please eat some extra turkey and dressing for me. We take it for granted in the States (and Canada), this ritual of getting together with people we care about once a year to simply appreciate each other and whatever we have over a feast.

It isn’t done here in Britain. Odd as this may sound, it is an especially telling difference between the North American and European cultures. It is just as revealing as the fact that the Russian language has equivalents for an astonishing variety of little sayings in English, but nothing comparable to “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

I miss the underlying hopefulness and optimism of the American version.

If you have Thanksgiving, I hope yours is a good one.
