Watchdog Sues to Preserve Records of War Chat in Signal

| 0

American Oversight, a watchdog group, filed a lawsuit to demand preservation of messages from the Signal chat in which top officials in Donald Trump’s regime discussed military attack plans against Houthis in Yemen.

Messages were set to automatically delete. This violates the Federal Records Act, which requires all government records to be preserved for at least a specified period of time depending on their nature and importance.

The lawsuit also points to the Administrative Procedures Act which allows review of unlawful actions involving government records.

American Oversight frequently files requests for information under the Freedom Of Information Act. If the government discards records it is supposed to keep, that obstructs the watchdog group’s ability to access documents.
