Virginia Legislature Takes First Step for 3 Progressive Constitutional Amendments

| 0

The Virginia legislature began the process of adding three amendments to the state constitution: easing restrictions on reproductive health care, restoring voting rights to felons with a spent felony conviction, and protecting the right to same-sex marriage.

These measures passed the House of Delegates the previous week. Passage by the Senate today cleared the first hurdle toward amending the constitution. After this, the next legislative elections must occur. Then the legislature must pass the measures again. At that point the proposed amendments go on a statewide ballot for voters to decide whether or not to add them to the state constitution.
