Homeland Security Fires All Advisory Committee Members
The Department of Homeland Security abruptly fired all its advisory committee members, discarding expertise and ending a probe into China-backed hacking of USA telecom companies.
Advisory committees make high grade expertise available to DHS and embodied considerable institutional memory until this disbanding. Committees have advised the department on such topics as natural disaster and emergency preparedness, critical infrastructure, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The last of those was in the midst of investigating a major breach of USA telecommunications by the Beijing group “Salt Typhoon.”
