Veterans Rally Against Deep Cuts to Government

| 0

Thousands of military veterans and other protesters rallied at the National Mall in Washington, DC, as well as in several other locations around the country, against Donald Trump’s deep cuts to staffing and funding of federal government.

Trump and his largest campaign donor Elon Musk have announced intentions to fire more than 80,000 employees from the Veterans Administration. Many federal workers they have already fired are military veterans.

The date chosen for the rally has symbolic importance because 14 March is abbreviated as 3/14. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment states that a person who has engaged in insurrection against the USA is not eligible to hold elected office. The amendment does not stipulate that criminal conviction for insurrection is required to trigger it, and does stipulate that a person ineligible due to this provision can only hold elected office if two thirds of both houses of Congress vote to allow it.

14th Amendment Section 3:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
