USDA Freezes Its Federal Education Funding to Maine

| 0

Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced it is freezing its federal education funding to Maine on the grounds that the state allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports, although the department has not investigated its assertion.

Donald Trump has repeatedly sought ways to punish the state ever since its Governor Janet Mills (D-ME) stood up to him when he verbally challenged her at an event in front of reporters. He says Maine will be targeted until the governor gives him a “full-throated” apology.

Last month USDA froze grants and research funding worth millions for Maine’s public universities, then later restored the funding.

USDA is also not the only agency to attack Maine. Their sea grant program was cancelled, then reinstated after outcry. The Social Security Administration cancelled the contracts for Maine to all births and deaths electronically, forcing such events to be recorded in person at field offices. After a few days SSA backtracked due to outcry over this targeted retribution.

School lunch programs funded by USDA will be exempt from USDA’s freeze, but all the personnel responsible for carrying out the program were fired.
