USA Vetoes G7 Proposal for Task Force Focused on Russia

The USA vetoed a Canadian proposal for the G7 to set up a task force to keep an eye on breaches of sanctions against Russia, notably through its “shadow fleet” of oil tankers.

Canada currently holds the Presidency of the G7, and offered its proposal ahead of an upcoming G7 meeting.

The USA wants a stronger G7 position against China and softened position in regard to Russia. Donald Trump has said he wants Russia re-admitted into the G7 (making it the G8 again). Russia was expelled after it invaded and took Ukraine’s Crimea region in 2014.
