USA Citizen Who Is Immigration Attorney Ordered to Self-Deport

| 0

Nicole Micheroni, a USA citizen and immigration attorney, was sent email by the Department of Homeland Security telling her to “self-deport immediately” because “DHS is terminating your parole. Do not attempt to remain in the United States—the federal government will find you.”

The subject line was “Notification of Termination of Parole.” The email did not specify a client name or case number. It was genuine. It took a moment for Micheroni to realize the email was to her, not about a client.

Micheroni is a partner at Cameron Micheroni & Silvia in Massachusetts. She has practiced immigration law for 12 years. DHS confirmed it sent the email to her by mistake. It is not entirely clear how the mistake occurred. Immigrants usually provide their own contact information to DHS, not that of someone else, even their attorneys.

Micheroni expressed concern about immigrants who have parole (temporary protected status) and receive the same email. “It’s meant to be an intimidation tactic to get people to leave the country.” She clarified, “Revocation of parole isn’t the same as a deportation order, and this email does not initiate deportation proceedings.” She advised people who receive such an email to consult an immigration attorney right away while legal options may still be available.
