Ukraine Severely Damages Kerch Bridge to Crimea

| 0

The day after disabling 34% of Russia’s nuclear-capable air fleet, Ukraine severely damaged the support pillars of the Kerch Bridge to Crimea with mines places underwater.

Ukraine placed mines containing 1100 kilograms of explosive on structural pillars of the bridge and set them off at 04:44 local time 2 June 2025. The extent of the damage inflicted is not clear. Traffic across the bridge was suspended early in the morning and again mid-afternoon, then resumed near 18:00 local time. For a while Russia also stopped maritime traffic off Crimea’s largest city Sevastopol.

This was Ukraine’s third attack on the bridge since Russia invaded Ukraine as a whole in 2022, with no two attacks done the same way. Russia took Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The bridge was subsequently built by Russia and opened in 2018, physically and symbolically the only direct connection of the peninsula with Russia.
