UK PM Starmer Trades Royal Invitation for an Undisastrous Visit with DJT

UK Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer visited Donald Trump at the White House, seeking to at least minimize whatever damage Trump inflicts on the UK.

Starmer hoped to exempt the UK from import tariffs, keep Trump from sabotaging the Chagos Islands agreement with Mauritius, and get Europe included in bringing about peace between Russia and Ukraine. Trump is entirely transactional, so as currency Starmer brought a royal invitation from King Charles for a state visit to Britain.

Starmer may have gotten a break on tariffs. He got Trump on side about handing over to Mauritius the Chagos Islands, which includes the Diego Garcia military base jointly used by the USA. Although it was not clear until the next day, he definitely did not pull Trump away from switching the USA to backing Russia against Ukraine and Europe.
