UK Invited to Join Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefcovic said the EU is open to the UK joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean (PEM) trading bloc as part of a post-Brexit EU-UK “reset.”

Šefcovic is responsible for post-Brexit relations for the EU. He told the BBC that allowing the UK to join the PEM convention (PEM) is “something we could consider.” PEM is not a customs union but makes it easier for member countries to trade with each other through shared rules. Members include the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, six western Balkan countries, Ukraine, Morocco, Syria and Palestine.

The UK has pledged not to join the European common market or customs union. The previous Tory government also refused to consider PEM, but the current Labour government is considering it.
