Two Congressional Committees Investigate Mayor of Nashville TN

Congressional Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN5) announced that two House committees will investigate Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell for allegedly “aiding and abetting” illegal immigration.

The Homeland Security and Judiciary committees will investigate they  mayor, his actions and whether Nashville used federal money “in criminal enterprise” regarding immigration.

These investigations appear to be retaliation after O’Connell criticized a “joint safety operation” this month in which Tennessee Highway Patrol conducted traffic stops in Nashville areas with high proportions of immigrants and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained many of the stopped motorists. ICE does not have legal authority to stop motorists without cause. THP can stop motorists with impunity. THP and ICE cars worked together in the roundup operation.

O’Connell said Metro Nashville Police Department, which had nothing to do with the roundup, has “been delivering safety to this community by reducing crime multiple years in a row” so there was no reason for federal agents to step in. He said federal agents have “shown us no proof” that people arrested in the joint state-federal sweep had “criminal histories or criminal intent.”
