RFK Jr. Orders CDC to Drop COVID Vaccination Recommendation for Healthy Children and Pregnant Women

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced he is making the Centers for Disease Control drop its recommendation of COVID vaccinations for healthy children and pregnant women.

This is not the normal procedure for making changes to the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule. The CDC’s independent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is not due to meet until later this month and was not consulted.

This will make getting COVID vaccination harder for healthy children and pregnant women because insurers typically only cover shots that are on the CDC’s recommended schedule.

HHS Press Secretary Vianca N. Rodriguez Feliciano issued a statement saying “HHS and the CDC remain committed to gold standard science and to ensuring the health and well-being of all Americans—especially our nation’s children.” But RFK Jr.’s decision clashes with science. Pregnant women remain at elevated risk of serious complications from COVID. Vaccinating them is the only way to protect their newborn children who cannot be vaccinated themselves. Numerous studies show a high incidence of long term harm after the acute phase of COVID, including in previously healthy children.
