Texas Measles Outbreak was Preventable

Gaines County, Texas, in the western part of the state, is having a measles outbreak described as completely preventable with vaccines.

The county has an especially low rate of vaccination against measles. It is widely regarded by scientists as the most contagious of all infectious diseases among humans. It can be fatal or leave lifelong physical harm. All cases in the county are among unvaccinated people.

Vaccination against it is about 93% effective. The disease was almost completely suppressed until vaccination rates fell.
