Supreme Court Leaves in Place Maryland Ban on Assault Weapons

| 0

The Supreme Court left in place the state of Maryland’s ban on assault weapons.

Such semiautomatic rifles as the AR-15 are popular not only among gun owners but notably among mass shooters. A national ban on them was allowed to expire in 2004.

After the 2012 mass shooting with an AR-15 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which killed twenty children and six adults, Maryland passed its ban on such weapons. The District of Columbia and ten states have such laws.

Almost three years ago, the Supreme Court issued a ruling that expanded Second Amendment rights. Challenges to gun-related laws sprouted all over the nation after that.

The court usually sides with gun owners.
