Storm Éowyn, expected to be the most dangerous ever for Ireland, hit Ireland and the UK with record-breaking winds.

Midway through the storm, Ireland recorded wind gusts up to 114 mph. Britain expected wind gusts up to 100 mph. Over 90,000 homes in Northern Ireland and 715,000 in the Republic of Ireland lost power. Rare red “danger to life” warnings were issued by the UK Met Office for Northern Ireland and much of Scotland due to flying debris, downed trees and limbs, large waves and power outages. UK emergency alerts were sent to 4.5 million mobile phones, the largest use of the system ever for more than test purposes.
