Software Update Prevents Third Radar Outage at Newark Airport After Telecom Failure

| 0

A software update installed Friday night was credited with preventing a third radar outage in two weeks at Newark Liberty International Airport when the primary telecommunications line had trouble again.

Although switchover to the backup system went smoothly, all traffic at the airport was halted for 45 minutes in case of further problems.

Since the first outage in this series on 28 April 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration replaced old copper telecommunications lines with new fiber optic lines for Newark’s airport, New York’s Kennedy International and New York’s LaGuardia. FAA intends to test the new lines for the next two weeks before switching operations to them.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy voiced the usual refrain that the current problems are the fault of former President Joe Biden and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and have nothing to do with his cutbacks in staffing where air traffic control and support for it were already understaffed.
