Newark Airport Radar Down Again for 90 Seconds

| 0

For the second time in two weeks, Newark Liberty International Airport radar screens went dark for about 90 seconds at 03:55.

Unlike the earlier episode, in this incident air traffic controllers did not lose communications with pilots at the same time. Controllers were able to tell pilots that they were experiencing a radar outage. One controller asked the crew of a FedEx flight to ask their company to apply pressure toward getting system instability fixed.

After the incident, the Department of Transportation promised to upgrade Newark’s air traffic control system to state of the art status, including new telecommunications infrastructure, new equipment and new software.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy gave a timeline of three to four years for this project. Rumors immediately swirled that he rerouted a flight his wife was taking so she would fly through LaGuardia airport instead of Newark.
