Social Security Reinstates Registration of Newborns at Hospitals in Maine and Deaths via Funeral Homes

The day after the Social Security Administration announced parents in Maine would have to visit SSA offices to register newborns instead of registering in the hospital and funeral homes could no longer electronically register deaths, Acting Commissioner Leland Dudeck rescinded the blockages.

Public officials, medical organizations and the public had especially condemned the withdrawal of in-hospital registration, an almost universal Enumeration at Birth process nationwide since 1989.
