CBO Says Republican Budget Will Have to Cut Medicare, Medicaid and/or Children’s Health Insurance

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office announced the Republican goal of cutting at least $880 billion from the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s purview can only be met by cutting Medicare, Medicaid, and/or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

CBO calculates the cost of proposed Congressional legislation.

Cutting funding from everything else the Committee oversees could save no more than $135 billion. That leave health care programs as the only feasible target.

Donald Trump has repeatedly said he will not reduce Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid but has already begun to trim around the edges of those programs administratively. He has explicitly said he want to cut government spending and increase the debt limit to fund a $4 trillion set of policies beneficial to the wealthy.
