Serbia Raids 4 NGOs Associated with USAID

Armed Serbian police raided four non-governmental civil society organizations associated with the U.S. Agency for International Development on the grounds of statements by Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, billionaire Elon Musk and others in the USA about USAID.

Trump has called USAID a criminal organization.

Among the raided organizations were the Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) which provides independent election monitoring and the Civic Initiatives group.

State Prosecutor Nenad Stefanovic said a special anti-corruption unit asked police to “collect necessary intel to check the information and collect evidence regarding suspicions of non-targeted spending of USAID funds, abuse of funds and possible money laundering.”

USAID funding in Serbia goes to democratic institutions and reforms, infrastructure and energy security projects, businesses and the economy, and several non-governmental organizations and independent media platforms. Most of the aid in Serbia goes to state institutions.
