Budapest Erupts in Protests After LGBTQ+ Pride Ban

| 0

Large demonstrations erupted in Budapest after Hungary’s parliament used an accelerated process to ban Pride events and grant authorities permission to use facial recognition to track down attendees.

In technical terms, parliament amended existing Hungarian law, declaring it an offence to hold or participate in events that violate “child protection” law prohibiting “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to anyone under 18. Attending such an event is punishable by fines up to 200,000 Hungarian forints (£423). Money raised through these fines must go toward “child protection.”

This is the latest move by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to target LGBTQ+ people. Hungary already has controversial laws to discriminate against and force invisibility of that community.
